Get up early for an exciting workshop on this day, along with cultural sightseeing. The guide will come to pick you up at the hotel. We will then drive to the beautiful city of Bouddhanath. We begin with a sightseeing tour around the Bouddhanath.
After the brief tour, we will proceed on to visit the workshop of the master artist who will introduce the art of painting these immaculate pieces. Thangka painting is a Tibetan Buddhist practice known to have begun as early as the 7th to 11th century. Predominantly these paintings depicted Buddha and different Tibetan deities, but it has evolved in the current times. The Newari Buddhist community in Nepal also took it in their stride and created similar paintings, known as 'Paubha.'
The master artists learned this art from a young age and have an excellent focus and commitment required to complete even the most intricate Thangka. While exploring the workshop, you will witness the attention to minute details and the use of thin brushstrokes in the paintings.
The class begins with the master artist teaching you the use of different brushes and painting tools. You will begin using the very basic Thangka techniques known as 'Sirdang,' which means small horizontal lines, and 'Choptang,' which means small dots. Depending upon your previous experience, the complexity can be taught accordingly.
As this is only a day's class, the design will be simple and easy to complete, like a form of Buddha, Lotus flower, or religious pieces. While completing the painting, a sense of calm, focus, and dedication will overcome you.
You can also take home the Thangka painting that you have completed as a remembrance.
After the amazing and soul-searching experience, you can buy some professional Thangka products from the master artist to take back home. The Thangkas range from a few hundred to even thousand dollars depending upon the patterns and the materials used. However, it adds to supporting the local craftsman and the economy.
Following the delightful day, we bid farewell to the master artist and will be driven to the hotel.
Learning the skill with a day's worth of workshops is not as easy. Hence some tourists also prefer to extend their stay to 15 to 30 days to learn the art to its fullest. Let us know your preferences, and we shall manage it accordingly.
