In the morning, after having breakfast, the guide will come to pick you up at your hotel for a sightseeing tour around Patan. Patan is a historical and artistic treasure in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley. You will visit Patan Durbar Square with many temples, courtyards, and even the popular Patan Museum. You will witness extensive usage of wood in the windows, doors, and even roofs of the age-old palaces and houses surrounding the square. The more exquisite pieces are the statues of Hindu and Buddhist deities.
After the guided sightseeing tour, you will be dropped off at a local artisan’s wood crafting workshop in Patan.
After a warm welcome, you will be shown some amazing woodwork made by the artisanal family, also called ‘Shilpakars’ in Nepali. Their decade-old occupation and passion for woodwork can be seen in the carved windows, doors, wooden masks, furniture, statues, and more that they create.
After taking a tour and looking at their work, we will begin the wood carving training. Although a short one, it will be very engaging. The artisans are professionals and ensure you have a wonderful and safe experience. We will begin with learning how to use the small tools in a block of wood provided to you. After sharing what you wish to carve, they will teach you how to chisel the wood, and eventually, in about 2 hours or so, you will have completed a simple piece.
Along with guidance from the artisans, you can also interact with them to learn about their stories. You might even learn about their Newari culture and language.
After you’ve finished up the craft, you can also opt to buy the piece you have crafted or the crafts made by the artisans to support their economy and lifestyle.
Once the workshop is over, the artisans will bid you farewell, and you will be dropped off at your hotel. Please let our representatives know if you wish to extend the workshop to more than a day.
