Early in the morning, after breakfast, the guide will come to pick you up for a drive to the Newari city of Bhaktapur. After reaching the city, you will take a sightseeing tour around Bhaktapur Durbar Square, once the place of abode for the Malla kings of Nepal.
You will tour the courtyards, Art Museum, and ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples and also witness several statues of gods and goddesses.
Following your short tour around the city, you will be escorted to Pottery Square. It is located just on the southwestern lane of Durbar Square. The Pottery Square is named as such for the age-old occupation of the community living there who are engaged in making clay products for day-to-day use. You will instantly spot hundreds of clay items like pots, masks, piggy banks, lamps, decorations, cups, and more kept to dry out in the sun.
The guide will also show you where the families bake these clay products after the clay has dried in the sun.
You will meet the professional ceramist who will provide the training. It will start with taking a lump of special ‘black clay’ and placing it on the automatic rotating wheel. Share what you’d like to try making. With moist hands, you will start shaping and molding the clay as per the direction of the ceramist.
The act is so engaging and soothing that you would not notice how quickly the time lapses. You can also interact with the locals to understand their way of life and learn a thing or two about their language and traditions.
After some of your pieces are ready, a thread will be used to cut them from the wheel. It will then be put in the sun to dry.
As the piece takes time to sun dry and some more to be baked, it could be difficult to take your creative piece back home. If you wish to take it, you might need to wait for a couple of hours to collect it. However, you do have the option of buying clay decorations that are out on display in the souvenir shop. This will support the local’s economy and lifestyle.
After the pottery class, you can choose to try some local Newari cuisine and the famous King Curd- Juju Dhau. Then you will be driven back to your hotel. If you wish to extend the classes, let us know.
