Following breakfast, the guide will meet you at your hotel and drive you to the ancient Newari city of Bhaktapur. As you enter the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the ancient palaces and courtyards will take you back to the times of the Malla king’s regime.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site has lots of interesting places to visit, including the tallest temple, Nyatapole standing at 30 meters height; the mesmerizing Golden Gate entrance to the royal courtyard; the stunning 55 Window Palace, Bhairavnath temple devoted to the fierce deity Bhairav and more.
You will head straight to Pottery Square in the southwestern lane from there. You will witness hundreds of clay items, some finished and painted while others are drying in the sun. The square has several clay shops and pottery workshops.
With the skillful guidance of a professional ceramist, you will begin molding the black clay by shaping it in the automatic rotating wheel. The soothing act is such that you will not notice how quickly the time lapses. By the end of the class, you will have at least learned to make a small clay item to be proud of.
After enjoying the activity, you can also visit their shop to buy some ceramic souvenirs to take back home.
Taking the narrow alleyways of Bhaktapur, you will be guided to a woodcarving workshop owned by a local. You will observe the intricate craftsmanship of the Shilpakar - the artisanal family. The Shilpakar will provide you with a small tool and a block of wood and ask you to follow the process of crafting in it. Through this hands-on experience and patience, you will create your unique piece of art.
After the workshop ends, you can buy a piece of craft - small carved windows, wooden masks, or statues- to support the artisans.
After lunch and enjoying the refreshing “Juju Dhau” - King of curds, we will drive to Changu Narayan temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated on a hilltop looking over the valley about 5 km from Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Considered the oldest temple in Nepal, its origin dates back to the fourth century. It is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu and is worshiped by Hindus.
You will be amazed by the architectural splendor with intricate stone and wood carvings suggesting mythological stories and depictions of gods and goddesses. Amidst other artwork, in the vicinity, you will find a fascinating large stone statue of Garuda (mythical bird) and a sculpture of Vishwarupa (Lord Vishnu’s Comic form).
Witness the mesmerizing sunset as the day draws closer, then drive back to your hotel. As you bid farewell to Bhaktapur, cherish the memories of the enticing city with fascinating art, rich culture, and ancient heritage.
