On the first day of the tour, you will be picked up from the hotel in Kathmandu for a drive to the southern outskirts of the Kathmandu valley, approximately 27 km away. The drive to the Chitlang village takes about 2 hours and offers stunning views of the Himalayas and the surrounding countryside. Upon arrival in the village, you will be welcomed by their host families and shown their traditional homestay accommodations.
After settling in, you will have the opportunity to explore the village. We will start with a visit to Nepal’s first goat cheese farm open to the public for viewing located in the village. It was established by a local, Ashok Kumar Thakuri, who learned the trade for 20 years in France. The factory has helped boost the economy of the community. You can try some goat cheese before we hop on to the next destination.
From there, you will visit the Ashoka Chaitya- a stone monument built by the great Indian Emperor Ashoka on his visit from Tibet. As per the local belief, the name of the village was taken from the Newari work ‘Chaitya,’ which means formed of stone.
You will then hike in the countryside to ‘Saatdhara,’ which means seven stone taps which were built in the name of Hindu gods and goddesses. Surrounding the stone taps is a beautiful botanical forest and natural garden. It is a holy place for worship.
Following the tour, we will retreat back to our homestay and engage in preparing and enjoying an authentic local meal with the host family.
Overnight homestay.
On the next day, after breakfast, we will bid farewell to the host family and thank them for their hospitality. Then we will take a drive to Kulekhani Dam, about 30 minutes away. It is a man-made dam created to generate energy. However, it has now been a popular natural attraction to tourists due to the greenery in the surrounding area.
A little further away on the northern shore of the Indra Sarovar lake, which joins with Kulekhani, is a small village called Markhu. It is predominantly inhabited by Newars, Tamang, and Margar communities. Another major attraction and activity there is a short half-hour boat ride.
After enjoying the boat ride, we will take a drive back to Kathmandu following the Pharping road.
